The Lucknow Police Commissionerate has reorganised and renamed the Anti-Romeo Squad and established new Mahila Suraksha Teams (Women Security Teams) at each police station in the district with the goal of improving women's safety. The goal of the action is to guarantee a more solid, considerate, and proactive strategy to stop crimes against women in public areas.
One specialised Mahila Suraksha Team, headed by a female sub-inspector and backed by two male and female constables each, will now be stationed at each Lucknow police station. According to Amrendra Sengar, the commissioner of police in Lucknow, "The new name aims to move away from moral policing stigma and fosters public confidence by highlighting women's security and empowerment."
These teams will cover hotspots close to schools, colleges, marketplaces, bus stops, parks, and other public areas every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A four-wheeler vehicle, riot control equipment (helmet, baton, body protector, rope), a licensed pistol, CUG phones, e-challan devices, and body-worn cameras for the in-charge officer would be provided to each squad.
Amrendra K. Sengar, the commissioner of police, stated that the redesigned program aims to foster public trust in addition to upholding the law. Their responsibilities will now include preventing drug use in the vicinity of educational facilities, keeping an eye on questionable activities, making sure that harassment incidents are handled quickly, and creating a safer atmosphere for women and girls.
The term Mahila Suraksha Team is in line with the overarching goal of empowering women and carefully and respectfully safeguarding their safety.
