In a landmark move set to transform urban mobility across Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has announced an ambitious plan to build a 1,575-kilometre metro network by 2047. This massive project aims to provide modern, efficient, and sustainable public transport solutions to some of the state’s most populous cities.

According to UPMRC officials, around 800 km of this network is expected to be operational by 2035, marking a significant step toward reshaping the urban transport landscape in the state.

The metro expansion is planned across multiple cities, each receiving a network designed to meet its growing commuter demands:

- Lucknow: 225 km – The state capital will see an extensive metro network connecting key residential, commercial, and institutional hubs, easing traffic congestion and promoting seamless connectivity.

- Kanpur: 200 km – As an industrial and commercial hub, Kanpur’s metro expansion will improve commuting efficiency and support the city’s economic growth.

- Noida: 150 km – Noida, part of the National Capital Region (NCR), will benefit from enhanced connectivity and integration with Delhi’s metro network.

- Varanasi: 150 km – The holy city of Varanasi will get a modern transport system, facilitating easier movement for residents and tourists alike.

- Prayagraj: 150 km – The metro will provide efficient transit solutions for the city, reducing travel time and supporting urban development.

- Agra: 100 km – A metro in the city of the Taj Mahal will enhance mobility for both locals and tourists, improving overall infrastructure.

- Gorakhpur: 50 km – The planned network will cater to the growing population and economic activity in the eastern region.

- Ayodhya: 50 km – This network aims to support the city’s urbanization while promoting tourist-friendly infrastructure.

- Meerut: 50 km – The metro will strengthen connections within the city and the surrounding areas, boosting regional mobility.

The UPMRC’s plan is not just about expanding the metro footprint; it also emphasizes sustainability, reduced congestion, and integration with other transport modes, such as buses, e-rickshaws, and suburban rail networks. By 2047, Uttar Pradesh aims to emerge as one of India’s most well-connected states, with a metro network that facilitates faster, safer, and more eco-friendly commuting.

With this transformative plan, Uttar Pradesh is setting a new benchmark for urban transport in India, combining vision, technology, and sustainability to meet the needs of future generations.
