Lucknow is set to turn another industrial page next week as Ashok Leyland’s electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Sarojini Nagar prepares for inauguration on January 9 — a landmark moment for North India’s green mobility ambitions. This state-of-the-art facility, a first of its kind for the region, has been established with a significant investment of around ₹1,500 crore and positions Lucknow at the forefront of India’s EV manufacturing landscape.
Built in a record timeframe, the plant will begin commercial production of electric buses with an initial manufacturing capacity of 2,500 units annually — with plans to scale output to 5,000 buses per year in the coming phases.
The facility occupies the Sarojini Nagar industrial belt — on land previously used by Scooters India Ltd — and symbolizes a strategic push toward sustainable mobility and industrial growth in Uttar Pradesh.
Officials point out that this development complements Lucknow’s growing industrial profile, which recently also included the BrahMos missile production unit in the same constituency. Local leaders see the EV plant as not only a green manufacturing milestone but also a job creation engine and economic booster for the region’s youth.
Industry experts say the EV plant aligns with broader state initiatives to attract large-scale investments under investor-friendly policies offering incentives like land support, subsidies, and streamlined approvals — further strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s position as a manufacturing hub.
As the inauguration draws near, optimism runs high across Lucknow — from policymakers to businesses and residents — who view the Ashok Leyland EV plant as a symbol of modern industry meeting sustainable transport solutions right in the heart of the city.
