The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, paving the way for a major leap in the city’s public transportation network. This crucial phase, part of the East–West Corridor, will stretch 11.165 km and connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, drastically improving connectivity across the city’s historical core and modern expansion zones.
The project covers 11.165 km — 4.286 km elevated and 6.879 km underground. There are 12 stations in total — 7 underground (Old Lucknow & congested areas) and 5 elevated (outer stretches). Charbagh will serve as a crucial interchange between the existing North–South line and the new East–West line, allowing seamless travel across the metro network.
The city is expected to undergo a significant transformation with the Phase-1B Lucknow Metro Rail Project. Improved connectivity, less traffic, environmental advantages, economic expansion, and a higher standard of living are all promised. Phase-1B will be essential in determining the city's development trajectory and sustainability by tackling major urban issues and laying the groundwork for future growth.
Upon completion, the Lucknow Metro network will expand to 34 km, positioning it alongside India’s other modern metro systems in terms of efficiency, coverage, and ridership. The East–West corridor will not just be a transport project — it will be a heritage connector, economic catalyst, and environmental asset.
