In the midst of heightened tensions with Pakistan after the terror attack in Pahalgam, the Indian government has organised a nationwide civil defence mock drill for May 7, 2025. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed 244 districts to conduct the exercise, which will include evacuation drills, air raid sirens, blackout simulations, and public training sessions, in order to get ready for warlike circumstances.
For the first time since 1971, this is taking place. A civil defence mock practice is intended to assess how prepared civilian and governmental systems are for a conflict, missile attack, or aerial assault. As the exercises mimic real-life scenarios, citizens practise sheltering skills, city lights are turned off, air raid sirens play and emergency personnel operate in real time. These exercises aim to prevent confusion, reduce fear, and save lives by increasing awareness and readiness.
During the drill, you may experience temporary blackouts, cell signal interruptions, or traffic detours. Authorities may also perform evacuations or make public declarations. In some areas, police and paramilitary troops may pretend that a battle is going on.
The government encourages people to see this as a preparatory exercise. This isn't a panic episode. Both the government and the public have a greater understanding of their roles as a result of the exercise. Officials are expected to assess the outcomes and make any necessary corrections.
