Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has added a major technological upgrade to its surgical infrastructure with a new state-of-the-art Operation Theatre (OT).

The facility, inaugurated by SGPGI Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman, is equipped with the institute's first robotic 3D digital microscope, along with a 4K endoscopy system. The upgrade is expected to improve surgical precision while making complex procedures more efficient and comfortable for medical teams.

Robotic 3D digital microscope

The robotic 3D digital microscope provides surgeons with high-definition, three-dimensional views and ICG fluorescence imaging, offering better depth perception and visibility during delicate surgeries.

Instead of looking through a traditional microscope, surgeons can use a heads-up display on large 3D monitors. This allows the entire surgical team to view the procedure simultaneously and also makes it easier for resident doctors to follow intricate operations as part of their training.

The new 4K endoscopy system further enhances visibility during procedures requiring detailed internal views.

Head & Neck Robotic Surgery

The technology will primarily support complex procedures in head and neck surgery, including delicate ear operations, lateral skull-base surgeries and complicated head-and-neck reconstructions.

With increased surgical capacity and improved technology, the new OT is also expected to help reduce waiting times and surgical backlogs for patients requiring specialised care.

For Lucknow, the upgrade marks another step towards strengthening the city's reputation as a major centre for advanced medical treatment and healthcare technology.
