Elon Musk’s satellite communications company, Starlink, is gearing up for a full-scale rollout in India, marking a major step in the country’s satellite internet revolution. The company plans to set up nine gateway earth stations across major Indian cities — Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow as part of its ambitious satellite communication (satcom) infrastructure build-out.

These gateway stations are crucial components of Starlink’s global network, connecting its constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to local internet infrastructure. Once operational, they’ll enhance connectivity, improve data transfer speeds, and reduce latency, paving the way for seamless satellite-based broadband access, especially in regions with limited fiber or mobile coverage.

For India, this move could be a game-changer for rural and remote connectivity, offering reliable high-speed internet to areas traditionally left out of the digital ecosystem.

Interestingly, Lucknow’s inclusion in this list highlights the growing tech and infrastructure prominence of Tier-2 cities. As Starlink sets up its gateway here, it could open doors for new-age digital services, education initiatives, and startup opportunities across Uttar Pradesh.

Starlink’s India plans position it alongside major global and domestic players vying for the satellite broadband market, including OneWeb (backed by Bharti Enterprises) and Amazon’s Project Kuiper. Each of these networks aims to bring affordable satellite-based internet to millions of new users, potentially reshaping how India connects to the web.
