Lucknow, the city where every street seems to hum with the rhythm of ghungroos, is set to welcome a grand new addition to its cultural map. By April next year, a state-of-the-art five-storey Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan will open its doors, providing an upgraded home for one of India’s most celebrated dance institutions.
For decades, the Birju Maharaj Kathak Sansthan in Qaiserbagh has nurtured generations of dancers. The new complex is spread over 4,510.65 square metres near the police headquarters on Shaheed Path. Built at an estimated cost of ₹40.96 crore by the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited, this campus aims to blend tradition with modern infrastructure—giving the elegance of Kathak a home as grand as its legacy.
The upcoming Sansthan is not just a teaching space—it’s an entire cultural ecosystem.
- Three Auditoriums
- Kathak Museum
- Conference & Seminar Rooms
- Recording Studio
The inclusion of hostels and modern facilities means the Sansthan can attract students from across India, while proposed collaborations with Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya could see the introduction of postgraduate courses and dedicated research programs in Kathak.
Pandit Birju Maharaj, the legendary exponent of the Lucknow gharana of Kathak, carried the art form to global stages. This new facility is not just a building—it’s a living tribute, designed to inspire the next generation of performers while keeping his vision alive.
