With 2024 bidding us a farewell, residents and tourists in Lucknow didn’t leave any stone unturned in welcoming the New Year. Some partied the night away while others decided to celebrate 2025 in a unique and rather interesting way. The Lucknow zoo was thronged by over 17,000 tourists on New Year’s Day.

On January 1, Lucknow zoo saw a record breaking footfall of over 17,000 tourists and residents. Here are some facts about Lucknow zoo and why it rightly is a popular hangout spot for one and all:

· Lucknow Zoological Park was established on November 29, 1921 to commemorate the arrival of Prince of Wales to Lucknow.

· The complex was established in the 18th century and known as Banarasi Bagh. Till date, the name Banarasi Bagh remains.

· In 2001, the name of the zoo changed from ‘Prince of Wales Zoological Gardens Trust’ to ‘Lucknow Zoological Garden.’ In 2015, the name again changed to ‘Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden.’

· The zoo is home to over 400 mammals, almost 300 birds and 73 reptiles representing 97 species including the Royal Bengal Tiger, White Bengal Tiger, Hoolock Gibbon, Blackbuck, Asiatic Elephant, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Hill Mynahs, Silver Pheasant and more.

· At the zoo, there are many experiences that you can indulge in like Toy Train, Nature Interpretation Center, Battery Vehicle, Paddle Boating, Children’s Park.

· The Zoo also has a Historical Bardari, Lawns and Fountains, Souvenir Shop, Wheel Chair and Child Train, Canteen and Food Court.

· The park also runs an adoption plan, donation center, wildlife hospital, aquarium and enough parking space for visitors.
