The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) showed its commitment to green urban mobility on World Environment Day 2025 by showcasing its significant progress in environmental sustainability. The theme for this year, "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience," enabled UPMRC to both link its initiatives with global objectives and adjust them to the evolving needs of urban India.

- Eco-Friendly Metro Operations

Sustainability was a major factor in the creation of the metro routes in Lucknow, according to UPMRC, the operator of the system, which is also aggressively expanding its networks in Kanpur and Agra. Over 70% of the networks' energy needs are currently met by renewable energy sources, mostly solar power systems installed atop stations, depots, and administrative buildings.

- Conserving Water & Developing Green Infrastructure

One of the significant accomplishments that was emphasised was the massive rainwater collecting systems that UPMRC has installed at almost every metro station. These systems have significantly reduced dependency on groundwater, with annual savings estimated to be thousands of kilolitres. Furthermore, green belts and vertical gardens along the corridors have helped to lessen the urban heat island effect in addition to enhancing aesthetics.

- Carbon Footprint Reduction

By encouraging a modal shift from private vehicles to mass rapid transit, UPMRC claims to have contributed to the annual offset of hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ emissions. With over a million commuters expected daily over its current and projected metro lines, the carbon savings are expected to increase dramatically over the next years.

- Green Drive On The Ground

To celebrate the occasion, a massive plantation drive was held concurrently in a number of areas in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra with the enthusiastic involvement of UPMRC employees, students, and locals. Additional eco-consciousness tests, exhibits, and awareness seminars took place throughout the day.

With a solid track record and lofty goals, UPMRC is still setting the bar for sustainable public transport in India and proving the value and revolutionary potential of green infrastructure.
