Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) is all set to give the city a new green landmark. On the land recently freed from encroachments near the Kukrail river, the authority will soon begin work on ‘Urmila Van’—a unique eco-park that promises to combine natural beauty, cultural significance, and recreational spaces for the public.
Spread over acres of reclaimed land, Urmila Van will be designed as a nature-centric recreational park, bringing much-needed greenery and open space to the city’s rapidly urbanizing landscape. The project aims to revive the Kukrail belt as a clean, green, and sustainable zone.
According to LDA Vice President Prathamesh Kumar, there is no longer any encroachment on the area next to the Kukrail River near Paper Mill Colony in Bhikhapur. On that land, this forest will now be constructed. The Miyawaki method of planting will be used, which will quickly produce a dense forest. The environment will be taken into consideration when choosing the plants to be planted here. In addition to giving the city clean air, this will support biodiversity, soil enhancement, erosion control, and climate purification.
Assistant Horticulture Officer Karn Singh claims that trees of the Banyan, Peepal, Pakkad, Pilkhan, Neem, Guava, and Mango species will be found in the Urmila forest. Along the riverbank, plants like canna, lotus, water lily, colocasia, and vetiver will be planted to help reduce the quantity of lead in the water.
The development of Urmila Van not only reclaims encroached land but also sets an example of how urban planning can balance development with ecology. With rising pollution and shrinking green cover in Lucknow, the project is expected to provide citizens a much-needed space for relaxation, wellness, and cultural connection.
