The Gomti River is not just a water body for Uttar Pradesh—it holds cultural, spiritual, ecological, and economic importance. Over time, rapid urbanisation, untreated sewage, encroachments, and pollution have degraded its flow, water quality, and riverine ecosystem.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched the ambitious “Gomti Revival Mission” in Lucknow, setting in motion one of the largest river rejuvenation drives in Uttar Pradesh.

The initiative aims not only to clean and revive the Gomti River, which flows through the heart of the state capital, but also to reconnect citizens with their cultural and ecological heritage.

The mission comes as part of the government’s broader agenda to restore the health of major rivers in the state, integrating it with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG).

Key Components of the Gomti Revival Mission:

The project is structured around multiple pillars — pollution control, ecological restoration, infrastructure improvement, and citizen engagement.

A dedicated Gomti Task Force has been formed to oversee the project. It includes officials from the Irrigation Department, Jal Nigam, Pollution Control Board, Smart City Mission, and Urban Local Bodies. Monthly reviews will be conducted at the CM level, and quarterly progress reports will be made public to ensure transparency. Additionally, GIS mapping and drone surveys will track the river’s changing flow, encroachments, and water quality in real time.

The Gomti Revival Mission represents a forward-thinking, people-driven approach to urban river management. By combining scientific solutions, traditional wisdom, and citizen participation, it holds the potential to restore Lucknow’s most iconic river to its former glory.
