Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh, is stepping up its public transport safety game. In a landmark move, the Lucknow Police in collaboration with the Transport Department has launched “Project Safe Ride”, a city-wide initiative aimed at making commutes safer, more transparent, and better regulated.

Under this project, all auto‑rickshaws, tempos, and e‑rickshaws must display a government-issued QR code by August 31, 2025 — or face a complete ban from operating.

The rising dependence on auto‑rickshaws, e‑rickshaws, and tempos for daily commuting in Lucknow has been accompanied by growing concerns over unverified drivers, unsafe rides, and cases of harassment or overcharging. Project Safe Ride seeks to address these concerns through a simple yet powerful verification system that puts control back in the hands of passengers.

By scanning a visible QR code on the vehicle’s windscreen, commuters will be able to:

1. Instantly verify driver’s name, photograph, and contact details.

2. Confirm vehicle registration and route permits.

3. Report suspicious activities or unsafe driving in real time.

With Project Safe Ride, Lucknow is sending a strong message — public transport must be safe, verified, and accountable. For passengers, it’s a welcome move that brings peace of mind. For drivers, it’s a call to step up and be part of a more responsible transport network.

By August 31, every auto, tempo, and e‑rickshaw in the city must display its QR code — making Lucknow’s streets safer for everyone.
