Lucknow is gearing up for a major transport boost as the East–West Metro Corridor finally moves towards construction. Stretching 11.2 km from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, the corridor will pass through some of Old Lucknow’s busiest and narrowest areas, including Chowk and Gautam Buddha Marg.
UPMRC has begun clearing key land pockets and conducting digital surveys to fit compact stations and underground tunnels into tightly packed neighbourhoods without disrupting daily life. Construction is expected to begin in phases from February 2026, bringing a modern metro link to areas that desperately need smoother connectivity.
A detailed land plan has already secured crucial parcels such as 823 sq m at Charbagh, 365 sq m at Gautam Buddha Marg, over 18,000 sq m near Chowk Crossing, and 18 hectares along Hardoi Road for the metro depot.
Temporary land near Sitapur Road will support casting operations, while 61 hectares have been set aside for future development. The corridor will start with three-coach trains and rely on Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and precast construction to minimise disruption in congested markets and residential zones. Once completed, the East–West Metro Corridor promises faster, safer and more reliable travel through the heart of Lucknow’s old city.
