Lucknow, the city of nawabs and nazakat, has added a new feather to its cap—emerging as the 3rd cleanest city in India in the prestigious Swachh Survekshan 2024, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Jumping an impressive 41 ranks from its previous 44th position in 2023, Lucknow’s stellar performance is being hailed as one of the biggest turnarounds in this year’s rankings. The city now stands right behind Ahmedabad (1st) and Bhopal (2nd), outshining many metros and setting a powerful example for urban India.
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) will be felicitated by the President of India on July 17, 2025, in a special ceremony recognizing top-performing cities in sanitation and cleanliness under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). This national acknowledgment not only marks an administrative win but is a tribute to the collective efforts of municipal staff, volunteers, and citizens.
Day and night, Lucknow Nagar Nigam put forth a lot of effort. There were more dustbins positioned. The trash collection got better. People were instructed to maintain a clean environment. There were numerous awareness campaigns in colonies and schools. The public also backed these initiatives.
It is not just the municipal employees who are responsible for cleanliness. The public must also support it. The people of Lucknow demonstrated that significant changes may occur quickly when everyone works together. The goal of keeping Lucknow clean was joined by a large number of volunteers, RWAs, and students.
Lucknow’s rise to the 3rd cleanest city in India is more than just a ranking—it's a cultural shift. A movement that shows what a city can achieve when its people take ownership of their spaces. As Lucknow continues to march forward, it now serves as a cleanliness role model for urban India.
