Lucknow Gets India's First Department of Military Medicine!

Command Hospital (Central Command) in Lucknow is now home to India's first dedicated Department of Military Medicine, strengthening research, battlefield healthcare, and military preparedness.

Established under the Directorate General of Medical Services (Army), the department will serve as a specialised academic and research hub focused on advancing military healthcare and preparing the Armed Forces for modern battlefield challenges.

The new centre aims to improve combat readiness by using Artificial Intelligence (AI), wearable health monitoring devices, predictive analytics, and real-time diagnostic technologies to identify health risks early and support soldiers in demanding operational environments.

The department will also develop indigenous medical doctrines and strengthen the expertise of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) through research, innovation, and specialised training.

Key focus areas

• Trauma and damage control for battlefield injuries.

• Medical response to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNe) threats.

• Combat psychiatry to improve psychological resilience and mental health support.

• Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) planning and disaster medicine.

• Operational medical logistics, telemedicine, and prolonged field care decision support.

The launch of India's first Department of Military Medicine further strengthens Lucknow's position as an important centre for defence healthcare, medical research, and innovation while contributing to the country's future military preparedness.
