Lucknow has added a remarkable feather to its cap as it steps into the future of clean mobility. The Tata Motors plant located on Dewa Road is set to roll out zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles, marking a significant technological and environmental achievement for the city.
This development places Lucknow at the forefront of India’s transition toward sustainable transportation. In collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Tata Motors has already initiated prototype trials, signaling steady progress toward bringing hydrogen-powered buses and commercial vehicles onto the roads. According to company leadership, it may take up to 30 months to fully develop a hydrogen-powered bus, but the groundwork has clearly been laid.
The Lucknow facility has long been a cornerstone of commercial vehicle manufacturing in the region. With the capacity to produce light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks as well as buses powered by diesel, CNG, battery, and now hydrogen fuel cells, the plant exemplifies versatility and innovation. Last year alone, it produced an impressive 56,000 commercial vehicles, underscoring its importance not just to the company, but to the region’s economy.
What makes this achievement even more notable is the plant’s commitment to sustainability. Operating entirely on renewable energy, the facility is water-positive and has achieved zero waste to landfill status—setting a benchmark for industrial operations across the country.
Uttar Pradesh continues to be a strong market for commercial vehicles, with particularly high demand for vans like Magic and Winger, as well as heavy-duty trucks. Being the second-largest market in India for commercial vehicles, the state—and Lucknow in particular—is now poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of green mobility.
This milestone is more than just an industrial upgrade; it is a symbol of Lucknow’s growing role in innovation, sustainability, and forward-looking development. As hydrogen-powered vehicles move closer to reality, the city stands proud as a pioneer in India’s clean transportation journey.
