In a major boost to road infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh has approved a ₹27,000 crore six-lane highway project connecting Barabanki to the Nepal border. The 153-kilometre corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time from Lucknow towards Nepal and key eastern districts. The project aims to improve traffic flow, strengthen regional trade, and modernise long-distance road travel.
For years, commuters travelling from Lucknow to Bahraich, Gonda and border areas have faced congestion and delays. Once operational, the new six-lane highway is expected to make journeys faster, smoother, and safer for both passengers and commercial vehicles.
The highway will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). Under this structure, the government shares construction costs with private developers and makes payments over time after the road becomes functional.
This financing model is widely used in national highway projects to ensure better quality construction, faster completion, and long-term maintenance. Officials believe this structured approach will help deliver the Lucknow-linked corridor efficiently.
The project will include CCTV monitoring and modern traffic management systems to enhance road safety. With better lighting, surveillance, and planned infrastructure design, authorities aim to reduce accidents and improve emergency response time.
The upgraded highway is expected to ease pressure on existing roads connecting Lucknow to eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Nepal border, offering a more reliable travel route.
As the capital city, Lucknow plays a key role in administration, business, and trade across Uttar Pradesh. Improved highway connectivity towards Nepal and eastern districts is likely to increase economic activity, support logistics networks, and encourage cross-border commerce.
Better road access can also promote tourism and strengthen Lucknow’s position as a major transport hub in northern India.
The ₹27,000 crore investment highlights the scale and long-term importance of this project. Once completed, the highway could become one of the most significant road corridors linked directly to Lucknow.
