Lucknow is a city known for its culinary heritage and if there’s one winter dish that stands out, it is the makkhan malai. A quintessential winter delicacy, this frothy dessert is liked by the locals for its taste and simplicity.

Makkhan Malai, also known as Nimish or Daulat Ki Chaat in other parts of India is a cloud like dessert made by churning flavoured cream. To enhance the flavours, it is topped with saffron, cardamom, rose water and a sprinkle of powdered sugar and pistachios. What makes this dessert a delicacy is its preparation. The frothy mixture is left overnight under the dew after which it attains its lightness.

Makkhan Malai has become a go to in Lucknow and one of the best areas to have it is in Chowk. You can find a lot of good makkhan malai vendors near Gol Darwaza and Akbari Gate. Recently, Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh visited Lucknow for one of his concerts and couldn’t help but relish the delicacy at Deepak Mishra’s makkhan malai shop in Chowk.

Seasonal in nature, makkhan malai is one dish that all Lucknowites look forward to with the onset of winters and it is a must try for anyone visiting the city during this time of the year.
