In a major step toward sustainable transport, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the operation of 200 air-conditioned electric buses across Lucknow and Kanpur. This pilot project, cleared by the state cabinet on September 2, 2025, will bring 100 e-buses each to the two cities, offering residents cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable rides.

The buses will be deployed under a Net Cost Contract (NCC) model for 12 years, a system where private operators handle most responsibilities like:

- Private firms will buy, operate, and maintain the buses.

- Charging stations, depots, and upkeep facilities will be established by the operator.

- Drivers, conductors, and maintenance staff will be appointed by the private company.

- Fare collection will be their responsibility, though the government will regulate routes and fares to ensure affordability.

Each city will see buses deployed on 10 identified routes, with at least 10 buses per corridor to ensure frequency and coverage.

By experimenting with the NCC model in Lucknow and Kanpur, UP hopes to make public transport more efficient, less financially burdensome on the exchequer, and more commuter-friendly.

With this move, Lucknow and Kanpur are set to lead the way in eco-friendly urban transit. The introduction of 200 e-buses is not just a transport upgrade—it’s a signal of UP’s commitment to cleaner air, modern mobility, and sustainable city living.
