Lucknow could soon add a new chapter to its urban transport story. Under the proposed UP-SCR 2051 master plan, the city is set to develop a ₹4,000-crore integrated water transport network that will use the Gomti River and key canals to create a greener and more efficient way to travel.
The plan includes navigation routes on the Gomti River, Kukrail River, Haidar Canal, and Sharda Canal, with water taxis, passenger terminals, floating jetties, and improved waterfront infrastructure. Designed to reduce road congestion and air pollution, the project also aims to make commuting more affordable while strengthening tourism and commercial activity.
For Lucknow residents, the proposal represents more than just a new transport option. It could transform the city's relationship with its rivers by improving connectivity, encouraging sustainable travel, and creating new recreational and economic opportunities. Once approved by the state government, the project will be implemented in phases, positioning Lucknow among India's emerging cities investing in environmentally friendly urban mobility.
